Yo, my name is Ranj. Follow me whilst I document my journey with cars 🙌🏽
My aim is to not only learn about my own car, but cars in general, as one day, I'd like to see myself owning a nice collection.
I'll be trying to modify my car myself as much as I can (and where it's safe LOL). Aim is to increase the power, change the aesthetics, attend some shows/events, and even try do some road trips at some point. I love creating content on cars, especially my own builds 👏🏽
Either way, if you subscribe, you'll be getting a new video every 2 weeks or so (give or take a week or two 🤪), as you know..life can take over sometimes!
Little more about me: I work full time. I'm a Bhangra dancer. Very rarely now, become an actor (I starred as lead in a Mini commercial in 2020...FTW moment 😎).

WHY MY STAGE 3 600BHP AUDI S3 8V BLEW UP! | S3Ranj
Since being back from our European roadtrip, I've been missing the S3 so much. As soon as I get it back, we're going for another roadtrip 100%.
I hope this video helps, as it was extremely informative for me. Massive thanks to Nathan, for allowing to document this journey. This isn't the end, and we will back at Ares Tuning once the engine has been stripped.
My car was running a stage 3 MRC ECU & TCU map when it failed.
Let me know if there is anything you want me to ask Nathan or cover in the next video!

wow this exhaust is amazing
It’s not bad! And you can pick them up for cheap.
What HP you running for ST 3??
@50mubarak here, it was 540 on high boost with octane. Low boost around 490-500.
Seems like a proper bloke! Looking forward to this!
No , the E30M3 is the best.

Didn't that engine pop😂 am I mistaken🤷♂️
I think it did, but that engine wasn't built by Ares. Since Nathan has had it, it's been doing crazy numbers! I could be wrong, but that's what I recall.
nice to see behind the scenes at ARES 👍
😮😮😮
Not that I want to out the team who tuned your car, but making note of boost pressure which is referred to often in this video, was the tuners not aware of this? Feels like, and correct me if I’m wrong, if you kept the boost around 1.9, the engine wouldn’t have blown?
It’s a fair comment to make. I used to drive the car in med boost 1.9 bar for 95% of the time. But tbh, I’ve been seeing a lot more cars tuned at 2.2 on a stock block, and I’m like.. does that sound promising. I do think it’s more of an intricate thing, meaning, I think boost pressure has its own variables, and I’m no tuning expert. But I think if it was kept at a lower boost, it would have been less likely to have blown up. I’m actually going to remove the current MRC map once’s it built, and go with a different tuner.
@@S3Ranj The videos you’re doing are brilliant - answers so many questions for people who will have who have / are thinking of tuning. I’ve done mild modifications to mine and will be looking at a stage 1 next and this has given me plenty of food for thought. You don’t always find these answers on the internet!!
@@ImRJHead love that man! Thank you! I’m actually super excited to get back for the 2nd instalment which is the week after next. Engine will stripped for the video! 🙌🏾🙌🏾! Make sure you enjoy your car this summer!
@@S3Ranj boost also varies by IAT. On a hot day more boost is required to achieve the same performance so the turbo has to work harder / generates more heat
not a Haldex system in a longitudely mounted engine bay. It's Quattro all-wheel-drive in the q5. the Haldex system is in the Q3.
@darrinscoilsclouds1498 For the new Q5, they annoyingly changed it to Haldex. You're right. It was always a proper AWD system, was the case for the A4, too.
@@S3Ranj no, they may have changed from a torsion set up. But it's still not a haldex system. Haldex is front wheel drive bias with the motor mounted like that it can't be.
It's an SUV that's like pushing a marshmallow into a moneybox
@@fachim-t8480 I’m not a fan of 4x4s, so I’m not going to try say anything 😂
Bit pointless in a Karen tractor
@@phiIiptx it’s actually relatively nippy. Whilst I don’t think it was done for the intention of speed, it does actually make the car good for efficiency.

@@nme_cs2 Bugatti, Ducati, Porsche, Bentley..that’s genuinely all I know.

Now you now it's limits so that's the + lol
Spot on 🙌🏾
was the engine stock at this power???
It was. But, 95% of the time, it was driven around in the med boost setting, so around 1.9-2 bar at 520bhp. High boost was 2.2 I think, or 2.1.
@@S3Ranj Did the engine blow on high boost? I know if you want reliable power you need to forge but if you ran medium boost and never high boost. Do you think it would have blown? Or would you have to go low boost like 1.7-1.8 bar to not blow the motor eventually?
@@johnboy2436 The engine blew when I took it back to get an additional map, which was a race fuel map. When it blew, it running just over 2.2 bar of boost. It’s hard to say whether it would have blown if I didn’t get the additional map, I genuinely do not know. I drove it for a solid year, no issues. I think a safe power, following my conversation with Nathan would be 1.9 bar at a MAX! Also make sure you have all the other supporting mods, and you keep up with maintenance. I think it should be good. Whatever you do, drive it, and enjoy it! You having it at 1.7-1.9 should be fine. Nathan’s S3 was 530BHP 1.9 bar and it’s still fine to this day. From what I recall anyway.
Gloss everytime
Only one original.
How much power does 1.9bar give Ea888?
If we take my exact set up for example, I’d say around 500-520BHP.
Might sound good on a racecar but not for public roads imo. I like the channel though. 👍
@@liamrochford3649 Fair, it is valved, so you have the ability to make it very quiet. Thanks!
All these people that upgrade engines without suspension are just idiots.
I can’t comment on that. But, I focused on the handling first, as the car handled horrible from stock.
Rela- ive 🎉
Nothing new here 😂 Engines are designed to survive the standard specification over a long period but as the milage goes up so dose wear, by putting the engine under more stress ( boost & torque ) you are just shortening the lifespan of components to which they will fail prematurely. Iv still never understood why people think they can double the power out of a engine and expect it to last
I partially agree. My car for instance hadn’t been driven hard. I regret not doing so. I use to drive it like a queen all the time. A real waste. There are too many variables though. My brother has an RS3 8P, much higher mileage than mine, driven hard, and it’s fine. Like I said, there are many variables. Nathan touched on maintenance, boost pressure, other modifications etc. So to answer your question, quite simply, because there are people out there with cars that are near double the power. It is straight forward, and it isn’t. Depending on the context.
@@S3Ranj yeh I agree the variables are there but pushing more power will always put more wear on the components which will lead to prematurely failures. One way to look at it is say someone has a 500hp one and it lasts 100k miles before failure then it was probably a good one that would do 200k plus
@@nickthegriffin I do partially agree with you, like I said. There are other things too, that play in people’s thought process, such as, risk versus reward. In any case, I’m glad my engine will be future proofed, so to speak.
@@S3Ranj yeh that's also a good way to look at it 👍 I'm old as f 😂 been doing this for years & although technology has changed as the Americans like to say " no replacement for displacement" 2.0l 4 cylinder will always be a balancing act when looking for performance
@@nickthegriffin Ha, very true indeed! Thanks for watching, really appreciate it.
Going stage 2 Friday, this is good to know still
Never a bad thing to have the knowledge!
Stage 2 innit 😂

Ouch. At least now it's with the best =) Mind blowing his knowledge isn't it!
Yessir!
The beast will back on the roads soon enough. Hope it all works out pal
What does boost pressure mean?
The amount of air the turbo pushes into the engine.
@@incognito96 ah nice thank you
Adding onto this, in this video they used bar, 1 bar is around 14.5psi.
best get your boost lowered boy
2.2 will actually be fine for the built engine, just not a stock engine.
as if! 😂
super interesting to see!!
I know a lot of people running 500BHP on these engines and they been fine for years, I think when you go past that it has to be forged for reliability. He’s given the car to the best in the business.
I've learnt that there are so many factors to consider. Boost pressure clearly has a lot to do with it.
1.9 bar 506 bhp, 2 track days and no issues touch wood!! But I look after it and no silly pops and bangs or launching. Great video.
@@ck6uk that sounds sensible. Thanks man!

Thanks bro 👊
Go fast risk everything 👍goodluck in rebuild🔥
As VD said…”quarter mile at a time” 🏁
Please tell us or do a vid on how much all this costs. It sounds expensive 😢
Noted for the next video!
I work on the mqb platform e855 evo is my bread and butter but 150bhp per cylinder on this platform is not a lot if its mapped properly, built right and maintained correctly
Interesting. That is probably what I want around 600bhp. I don't want anymore out of this car tbh. Just seen your videos, good stuff!
@S3Ranj 200 bhp per cylinder is getting there. Like he says there are many variables but oil pressure is the most important thing to stop the rods touching the crank bearing. 600bhp should be safe all day if done properly. My ttrs is built for 300bhp per cylinder....that won't last but I'm OK with that 🤣
@S3Ranj thanks for checking out the videos man 💪
What's wow about it. It's a blown engine.
If that’s what you took from the whole video…HELP!
Absolute quality video 🙌🏻
once a person says its basic physics, close your ear... "when you compress air, it generates heat"?🤣🤣... In simple logic, more boost/air with less fuel results in more heat due to pre ignition and the rest follows...
Incorrect, that quote was “simple logic” referring to the more you compress air, the hotter it will get as molecules are forced closer together (basic physics) Regardless of air to fuel ratios, that increase in boost will always see a hotter mixture. This is why we see increased exhaust gas temperatures as we increase the boost - the more power you extract, the more heat it will generate with the same afr ratio As for “the more heat due to pre ignition” - pre-ignition is a result of increased cylinder/piston temperature, not a reason for increased cylinder temperatures. It is a pre-spark combustion caused by fuel igniting prematurely as a result of cylinder temps exceeding the lower heating value of the fuel used
I can't comment, as I didn't do well in Physics! 😅
If pre-igntion was the sole cause for more heat I dont think the intercooler would be before the air reaches the engine..... 😂 Its almost like compressing air does indeed cause it to heat up 🤔 hence why the more boost you run the larger/higher density of intercooler you want to run to keep intake air temps as close to ambient as possible.
Great video! Nathan sound bloke 👌
Thank you mate!
oh god. You didnt go to Ares... Be prepared for a fucked build, under specced components and bad workmanship putting your car back together! Worst decision of your life going there
